thank you for your support

The Track Renovation Committee would like to extend our gratitude to those individuals who supported the renovation project at the Ludlow High School.

It has been a couple of weeks since Ludlow’s town election and although ballot question one (renovation of the high school stadium) did not pass the Track Renovation Committee understands that these past few months have been difficult for all of us and our committee shares in the struggle as we start to reopen our community. During this pandemic the high school athletic facility was used daily by residents to help deal with the stress of these uncertain times. As a committee we learned from this election and will regroup and continue our quest for a state of the art athletic facility as it is evident more than ever that Ludlow needs a quality facility for all its residents.

Although the outcome of the election was not what we had hoped for we appreciate the time and energy that was given towards this project.

Going forward, for those that contributed financially or have made a financial  commitment towards the renovation project please know that we are moving ahead and will continue to fundraise and seek additional means in order to raise money for this project.

Again, thank you to our students, families and community members who have stood with us.

TRACK AND FIELD REPLACEMENT COMMITTEE MEETINGS DUE TO COVID-19

Due to the current pandemic situation and the restrictions that have been put in place by our state and local officials the Track and Field Replacement Committee meetings will be resuming shortly and will be held remotely via Zoom.

We will continue to update as new information becomes available.

TAX INFORMATION

This would be a debt exclusion.

A debit exclusion would mean that the tax goes away after the period of the loan

(after paid in full the tax from this project

would go away).

Not an override.

An override is a permanent addition to the

Town of Ludlow's levy limit.

The cost per year for this project would be $22 based on the average household ($231,000 average household).

Approved Conceptual Design - Plan D (Voted/Approved by Track and Field Replacement Committee 2/19/20).

The site plans and budget estimates reflect changes/deletions made by the Committee.

ITEMS PENDING:

All estimates and plans are pending voter approval

on March 23rd and May 11th Town Meeting vote.

MAINTENANCE PROPOSAL

Superintendent Recommendations:

As part of the annual Ludlow Public Schools budget a recommendation to the School Committee would be to place a minimum of $10,000 per year into a facility athletic maintenance account.

The purpose of this would be to fund future needs of the athletic complex.

Additional Recommendations:

Monies earned from athletic facility rental shall be placed into the athletic maintenance account.

Fundraising efforts would continue and add funding to this account.

MAINTENANCE - COST ANALYSIS

Routine maintenance has always been done on the complex.  Routine is the day to day maintenance.

Important to remember; this was not brought on by neglect from the School Department or the High School.  The track is 20 years old and has reached its potential for usage.

The underlying issue for deterioration has been increased by the drainage issues on site.  These repairs were brought to Capital Improvement Committee on several occasions.

Ludlow High School

$15,350 per year on routine scheduled maintenance to the athletic fields

  • $7,350 (Football/Soccer Field)
  • $3,000 (JV Baseball Field)
  • $5,000 per year for fertilization to all fields

137 total hours of usage

This includes: football, soccer; both boys/girls

Youth football, soccer

  • $7,350 divided by 137 hours (total usage) = $53.60 per hour of usage

Updates as of February 19, 2020

It was decided and voted by the Track Renovation Committee to remove the following items from the original budget estimate list as provided by the engineers at Mott MacDonald.

  • Arch  -  $30,000  -  The arch will be omitted at the entrance to the field. Originally planned for use of naming rights to the complex (originally put in place for a large donation - naming rights).

  • Baseball Field  -  $92,200  -  The baseball field will remain in its current location.  Updates such as groundwork, fencing and netting along left and right field foul lines for protection and prevention of foul balls will be implemented.  The safety of spectators and those located at the adjacent concession stand was important to the committee.  An extension to the backstop was also suggested.

The committee decided unanimously to remove these items from the plan; although aesthetically the arch would have created a welcoming look to the complex it is unnecessary to the overall project.  The baseball field is used solely for JV baseball and will remain as such.
